چکیده

Time Preferences and Lifetime Outcomes This paper investigates the relationship between time preferences and lifetime social and economic behavior. We use a Swedish longitudinal dataset that links information from a large survey on children’s time preferences at age 13 to administrative registers spanning over five decades. Our results indicate a substantial adverse relationship between high discount rates and school performance, health, labor supply, and lifetime income. Males and high ability children gain significantly more from being future-oriented. These discrepancies are largest regarding outcomes later in life. We also show that the relationship between time preferences and long-run outcomes operates through early human capital investments. JEL Classification: D03, D91, J01

The Structure of Intertemporal Preferences under Uncertain Lifetime

Does experimental evidence of the common difference effect imply that intertemporal preferences are time inconsistent? Do these features of choice suggest inherent characteristics of preferences, or could they be traced to an underlying factor that shapes the environment? The effect of uncertain lifetime on intertemporal preferences is studied. A demographic model that allows for unobservable h...

Diminishing Impatience: Disentangling Time Preference from Uncertain Lifetime

A decision maker with time consistent preferences may exhibit diminishing impatience, when uncertain lifetime is accounted for. Uncertain lifetime captures not only the risk of mortality, but also the possibility that a promise for a delayed reward might be breached, or a postponed consumption might not be realized. The restrictions that time consistency imposes on additive intertemporal prefer...

Explaining Heterogeneity in Risk Preferences Using a Finite Mixture Model

This paper studies the effect of the space (distance) between lotteries' outcomes on risk-taking behavior and the shape of estimated utility and probability weighting functions. Previously investigated experimental data shows a significant space effect in the gain domain. As compared to low spaced lotteries, high spaced lotteries are associated with higher risk aversion for high probabilities o...

A social recommender system based on matrix factorization considering dynamics of user preferences

With the expansion of social networks, the use of recommender systems in these networks has attracted considerable attention. Recommender systems have become an important tool for alleviating the information that overload problem of users by providing personalized recommendations to a user who might like based on past preferences or observed behavior about one or various items. In these systems...

The Lifetime Behavior of a New Discrete Time Mixed $delta$-shock Model

In this study, a mixed $delta$-shock model with discrete-time is defined by combining $delta$-shock and extreme shock models. In this model, a system with multiple states fails in two ways: first, when k interarrival times between two consecutive shocks with magnitude larger than the critical threshold $gamma$ are in $[delta_1, delta _2], delta_1 < delta _2$; and second, when the interarrival t...
